Awstats - Connect to site from - Stats

Recommended Posts

I am very confused.

In Awstats, for March I am showing under the heading of "Monthly History"

Mar 2006 163 922 7440 7537 318.03 MB

Under the heading of "Connect to site from"

I am showing:

Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines) - Full list

- http://www2.xxx.com/track/MTg0NjozOjI1/ 15 15

- http://join.xxx.tv/track/secure'>http://join.xxx.tv/track/secure'>http://join.xxx.tv/track/secure 15 15

- http://galleries.xxx.com/dora/03/m2/567483/2/9/n/rfsm.ht... 15 15

- http://galleries.xxx.com/alyssa/03/m2/567483/1/9/n/rfsm.h... 15 15

- http://join.xxx.tv/track/secure 11 11

- http://www.xxx.com/go/567483/1/9/n/rfsm 11 11

- http://join.xxx.tv/track/secure 10 10

- http://www.xxx.com/wm1361/index.html 10 10

- http://www.xxx.com/klosex/pantyhose/fishnets.html 4 4

- Others 7089 7094

I have replaced the actual domain names with "xxx" because of the policy of this board.

If I understand what "Connect to site from" means, this is telling me that all the above listed sites, and the 7089 that are not show, have links to my web site!

Now this is very confusing since all the sites, or most, are adult web sites. Confusing since mine isn't an adult web site.

I have gone to some of the links listed and I do not see where those sites are linking to me.

Due to the VAST number of links I feel there is something going on that isn't on the up and up, but I am failing to find it.

I was hoping that one of you may have run across this before and you might be able to tell me what is going on.

Please feel free to ask questions, as I'll be happy to try and find the answers if I can solve this riddle.

Feel free to view the stats directly...

Are you the first owner of this domain? It could have previously been an adult website. Check out google's cache.

HI muckleroy, Welcome to TWT

What you are seeing is commonly referred to as Referral Spam.

This is kind of an old trick among spammers. They are taking advantage of the fact that your stats are publicly available and they are relying on their sites showing up in your logs, your stats being crawled by search engines, thus links back to their sites.

There's a couple things you can do, if you are running Apache:

If you have mod_security installed, put the following in an htaccess file

>SecFilterSelective "HTTP_REFERER" "(poker|sex|porn)"

If you have mod_rewrite installed, put the following in an htaccess file

> RewriteEngine on
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} poker [OR]
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} sex [OR]
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} porn
 RewriteRule .* - [F,L]

Both of these will deny websites that use the poker, sex, porn keywords

The other thing you should do, is password-protect the stats that you just linked to

Good answer Cyanide! I was truly stumped on this question too.... looks like Cyanide is da man for hosting questions! :)

cyanide that makes complete sense. Thank you. I was just asking myself last night, "Is it a bad thing to have my stats open to the public?" You've answered two questions.

I'm nailing that fence board down now. :D

what tool is used to see if stats are public? what tool prevents them being public?
