Spammers are about!

Recommended Posts

My Forum run SMF has been hit by spammers the last two days after months of being free, It is so bad I think they are messing up the server.

I got the following message:

FastCGI Error

The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Error Details:

•The FastCGI process exceeded configured activity timeout

•Error Number: 258 (0x80070102).

•Error Description: The wait operation timed out.

HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.

Internet Information Services (IIS)

and couldnt even access my forum.

The SMF help forum say take it up with your host!

I have now changed the registration questions that hopefully only UK residents will know the answers!

I have also deleted all accounts that have not posted in the last 10 days.

Why dont google do something so that the links on forums are worth less or worthless. as far as Pr is concerned.

OR at the very least, non relevant website links are given no benefit at all.

My site is about new homes, so Canadian drugs or UGG Boots should not be relevant.

I'd like to see them answer my anti spam questions now!

Then forums would die all together. There are people who only post on forums for the backlink (totally not what participating in a forum is about but they do).

Why not just blacklist drugs and ugg plus any other common spammer terms from your forum so the posts don't show up at all? Either moderate posts with these terms or auto ban the poster. (The latter probably would be kind of harse. If this forum did that you would have been banned for your reply above). You can also blacklist/deny certain known spammer IP addresses/ranges but again you might deny access by legit visitors/members of your site.

I ban everyone who spams a link until they have made 15 posts on topic and relevant.

Those who dont post in 30 days get deleted.

When the spammers hit it just takes so much time!
