What's your internet speed?

Recommended Posts

Which plan did you get? I just did it and came back with 4.5 megabits.

Hey Fabio, I got the Videotron High Speed Internet (5.1 megabits per second). I guess I live in an area where many have the cable service, since my area is really not supported by the Bell ADSL service.

Did you see that Videotron came out with 16 megabits per second? I find that mind blowing, but I won't make the move because I don't see the benefit. Well, I understand the benefit I just don't think that it's worth yet. Maybe one day when we'll be able to view live streams regularly that I may upgrade.

For those that don't know, I've been in the process of moving and I just got my new ISP hooked up today and decided to run the test again with my new services ... now bad:

Communications 4.8 megabits per second

Storage 583.1 kilobytes per second

1MB file download 1.8 seconds

Subjective rating Awesome

... a far cry better than what I was using before, but I moved and changed providers under less than desirable circumstances, so I guess this is a small silver lining for the cloud ...

This spring they're suppose to be bumping up to over 8mbs .... hard to believe in '96 we thought 56k was kick ass :D

Nah... in '96, I was running dual phone lines with EQL (line load balancer) to create twice the speed. We didn't think 56k was awesome... we just couldn't afford better so we put up with it.

In 1996 I was still serving in the military in Germany so actually getting past 28k was pretty good, but the thought of 56k was awesome

I've retested my internet speed, and seems with Videotron Cable, things just get better! Here are my new specs:

4 megabits per second

Communications: 4 megabits per second

Storage: 492.3 kilobytes per second

1MB file download: 2.1 seconds

Subjective rating: Awesome

Here are the specs from my last test, made last year (summer/fall)

Communications 3.2 megabits per second

Storage 391.3 kilobytes per second

1MB file download 2.6 seconds

Subjective rating Awesome

Rob, I remember those days of the 56k and 28k modems! I actually had a 14k USR modem. Downloading a 100KB file took minutes. I remember downloading Netscape Communicator... I think it was a 20MB download... and it took like hours to complete.

Yes, when I was with Army CID, it was less taxing to wait for a paper file on something than trying to access ACIRS (crim intel and rptg sys) via the modem ... we'd rather wait for a hard copy to make it across the Atlantic versus trying to dial into the mainframe and wait for hours on end and then get cutoff 3/4 of the way through a download, and of course you could only start over, not pick up where you left off ...

Turtles?

We still get that every few days here when our inventory management system people dial in to our server. We set up VPN for them, but they don't like using it. I guess T-1 isn't fast enough... they want 28k modem speed.
